Preparing for fantasy football … with AI?

Note: This is a bit different from my usual data- and product management-related articles, but this is top of mind right now and has a data/AI slant so instead of posting it on my personal site, I thought why not post it here. Let me know your thoughts!

It’s the end of summer break for the kids, and while some parents may be worried about back to school stuff, my worries are around how I am going to catch up on all the off-season NFL news so that I am ready to play fantasy football :-)

I have been playing in one league for 18 years now and somehow I crank up my podcast listens around this time of the year so that I don’t make silly mistakes like drafting an injured player too high or drafting a player who has implicitly lost his value because he is in a worse offense now after his trade.

I have been meaning to dabble with some of the AI tools in the market but didn’t have any specific project in mind to make the most of the use. Yes, I have used ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for random or typical uses — finding tech support, getting basic python coding tips and actual scripts, writing more meaty end of the year reviews, summarizing articles, etc. — but I have not used “AI” for a bigger project yet.

So I am thinking this year I will try to run the last 10 days worth of podcast mp3s through a transcription service and a summarization service to see what kind of information I can get out of the tools. I did not know what’s cool (and legit) these days so I asked on Threads and got one helpful reply which is to create an automation to read the mp3s off a location, sending them through Whisper by ChatGPT and then load it to a Google Doc for reading. I like that approach and will try this weekend.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know … it’s been a few years since I won the draft but it’s also been a long time I have gone truly prepared to my fantasy football draft. Help me :-)
